The C'ville AVID Program Partners With The YMCA to Bring A Teen Center to CharlottesvilleA group of AVID students in grades 8-12 was invited to help design Charlottesville's first teen center at the local YMCA. The Teen Center aims to provide students with a safe space for both academic and social activities. Along with study spaces, the Teen Center will offer athletic facilities like an indoor track and basketball court, as well as a safe after-school space for teens to complete school work or hang with friends.

The last TRF of the fall semester is due on January 11th. On January 26th, the first TRF will be due for the Spring semester.
AVID Students Go To Innovations Expo at The Darden School Of Business at UVA
Two Avid students attended the Innovations Expo at The University of Virginia Darden school of Business iLab. While there they had an opportunity to share their experience in AVID, as well as weighed in on how they think that AVID has been beneficial for them, and how they believe that it would be beneficial for students all over the city of Charlottesville and Albermarle County.
Winter Break!
Students will be on winter holiday break from Monday, December 22nd through Friday, January 2nd. Students and staff will return from break on Monday, January 5th. Buford AVID students are not required to submit a Tutorial Request Form (TRF), and AVID will not meet after school.

On Friday, November 21st, Buford 8th grade AVID students will travel to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond. Students will participate in a walking tour of the VCU campus, an informational session, and eat lunch. The cost of lunch is $7.00. This is a great opportunity for your child to learn more about the college process. Below is an approximate itinerary for the visit:
8:45AM: Principal chat: All 8th grade students will report to the auditorium for a meeting with administration to discuss expectations, rules, and regulations
9:15AM: Depart from Buford
10:30-11:30AM: Arrive at VCU and begin information session and campus tour
11:30AM-12:30PM: Lunch on campus
12:45PM: Load buses and depart from VCU
2:00-2:15PM: Arrive at Buford

Each year, the Virginia Film Festival (VFF) hosts a screening of a curriculum-relevant film for students and teachers as part of our Outreach program. This year, our school screening is on Friday, November 7th at 10:00AM. Our film is Freedom Summer, which is a story of a group of over 700 students of all races who fought for the rights of African Americans to vote in Mississippi in 1964. Following the film, the Festival will host a panel discussion with Julian Bond, a civil rights leader, history professor, and former national NAACP chairman, and Deborah McDowell, Director of the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies at U.Va. The program will conclude by 12:30PM.
Time of field trip: 9:15AM to 1:15PM

While visiting the two schools, students will be able to see firsthand two of Virginia's unique and thriving institutions. They will have the opportunity to tour each campus, from the grounds to classrooms, which will allow the students to truly picture themselves as future collegiate underclassmen. AVID STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT FINANCES
Students travel to the JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT FINANCE PARK in Richmond, VA
Eighth grade students enrolled in AVID and Independent Living traveled to Richmond to attend Junior Achievement Finance Park on Tuesday February 11th. Students worked in pairs with volunteers from CapitalOne to experience real-world perspective of finance. Each student was given a Life Scenario- an annual salary, marital status, and ages of children, if any, that they used to create a monthly budget. With the help of their volunteer, students calculated Gross Annual Income, federal taxes, social security and other monthly obligations and to determine their Net Monthly Income.

As a small token of our appreciation, we would like to share our AVID 3D holiday card with you 2(seen on the left). To access the card you must first:
1) Go the Apple Store on your Apple device (Iphone or Ipad) and download the Clever Co. app titled Clever Look.
2) Once downloaded, open the Clever Look application.
3) Now you have the option of scanning the image located on the left of the screen or printing and scanning it on paper.
3) Watch the image come to life right before your eyes. Happy Holidays!

On Saturday December 6th, Fifty AVID students, along with parents and staff visited Virginia Tech & Radford University. Situated beautifully in western Virginia, both schools offer some of Virginia's best collegiate majors and campuses. The students had the wonderful opportunity to experience campus life, hands on.

On a brisk and early Saturday morning, Charlottesville's middle level AVID students traveled to Randolph Macon College and Virginia State University. While visiting the two schools, students were able to see firsthand two of Virginia's unique institutions. Having the opportunity to tour each campus, from the grounds to classrooms, allowed the students to truly picture themselves as future collegiate underclassmen.
